The Derby Guide - Oakwood in Derby UK
Oakwood is Derby's largest and newest suburb. It was built largely throughout the 1980's and 90's but some building still continues and there is a great desire by builders to extend further into green belt land that surrounds part of the estate.
Oakwood has a mixture of houses, mostly with small gardens. Several small pockets of shops have appeared as well as two new pubs. A primary school has also been added after many appeals by residents but it appears insufficient in size to match the needs of the estate.
The Springwood Leisure Centre, right in the heart of the Oakwood estate, was built in 1997 and offers access to all including disabled people. It's facilities include a sports hall, dance studio, squash courts and a fitness studio. For more information on it see Springwood under Sports centres.
Chaddesden Wood, also known as bluebell wood, situated off Springwood Drive is special because it is the only ancient oak woodland in the city of Derby. It was declared a local nature reserve in 1991 to help ensure it's proper protection and management. The wood contains a nature trail, about one kilometre long, that the visitor can follow.
